The Changing Role of the law firm COO

Edward Drummond is delighted to have recently supported a leading global law firm with the appointment of its UK Chief Operating Officer.

The remit of the law firm COO is changing. Increasingly, our law firm clients are seeking a more elevated, commercially minded COO, who can lead a firm through change. Law firms are operating in an increasingly complex environment, and the legal industry is evolving at pace.

Technology and AI are reshaping both the advice clients require and the way legal services are delivered. At the same time, firms are managing heightened cyber risk, geopolitical uncertainty, evolving regulation, and continued pressure to deliver profitable growth and stronger partner performance.

The Evolving Role of the Law Firm COO
Against this backdrop, the COO is becoming an increasingly influential member of the leadership team. Moving beyond the traditional operational remit, they are playing a vital role in shaping strategy and finding new opportunities for growth and profitability.

Technology is at the centre of much of this change. The COO works in partnership with the General Counsel and Risk function to ensure AI adoption is delivered safely and responsibly. At the same time, it partners with the Chief People Officer on the implications for workforce planning.

The efficiency of the business services function is in the spotlight at almost all law firms. Firms continue to examine opportunities to offshore, outsource, and streamline the infrastructure they need. By embedding AI into the delivery of work, the operating model at law firms is changing, and the COO is at the heart of this debate.

Leadership Matters
Technical and operational capability is only part of the picture. The firms we speak to consistently emphasise the importance of leadership style and personality to the success of these roles. The most successful COO combines commercial acumen and innovative thinking with the ability to communicate an unclouded vision and, crucially, brings people with them. Leaders who encourage constructive challenge, build trust, and foster a positive culture are essential to delivering lasting change.

A Broader Sphere of Influence
The COO remit has broadened. We are seeing a continued theme in which the role has close oversight over, and in many cases management of, other corporate functions; including transformation, business development, people and culture. Individuals are needed who can bring these functions together. This expanded brief lends itself to an emergence of strategic Chief Financial Officer or Chief Technology Officer talent, positioning themselves for these roles. The traditional model of an operations focused COO role is continuing to decline.

The COO has consequently become one of the most influential positions within law firm leadership. It is a role that demands strategic vision, commercial acumen, exceptional stakeholder management, and the ability to lead transformation across an organisation. Succession planning and attracting top leadership talent have become increasingly important for firms looking to maintain their competitive edge.

Considering Your Next COO Appointment?
If you are considering your next COO appointment, or are a law firm looking to add a commercial voice to your leadership team, we would be delighted to talk to you about this market.
